DIIS Climate Collaboration

Global challenges require global collaboration. In recognition of this, DIIS works closely with a range of national and international partners in our climate change research. Apart from projects led by DIIS itself, we are currently partners in the following joint research projects and networks on climate change and development:

  • Adaptation Research Alliance connects researchers with policy-makers, practitioners and communities globally to support action-oriented research on climate change adaptation.
  • Rights & Resilience investigates the relationship between resilience and land rights in the context of climate change adaptation.
  • Share or Spare examines the political and organizational factors that shape coordination of climate finance from global to local levels.
  • Tendering Sustainable Energy Transitions explores the impacts of renewable energy projects on social, institutional and industrial development.

Adaptation Research Alliance (ARA)

The ARA is a global network for action-oriented climate research that was officially launched at COP 26 in Glasgow in 2021. The alliance connects researchers, policy-makers, practitioners and communities across the Global South and Global North, aiming to support action-oriented research that strengthens adaptation policy and outcomes. The ARA has a strong South-driven emphasis and focuses on the real-world challenges and initiatives of local communities and stakeholders.

Rights & Resilience (RARE)
The project explores the relationship between resilience and land rights in the context of pastoral climate change adaptation in Kenya. It examines how adaptation strategies interact with land needs, land conflicts, and land reforms, and what the implications are for efforts to support community land rights for resilient rural development.

Collaborating partners: University of Copenhagen, University of Nairobi, International Livestock Research Institute, SciDev.Net, and DIIS.

Funding: Danish Consultative Research Committee for Development Research (FFU).

Duration: 2018-2022.

Share or Spare?
Climate finance donors agree that coordinating funds improves efficiency and effectiveness, yet the climate finance landscape is highly fragmented. The project examines why coordination problems persist by investigating the political and organizational factors that shape coordination of climate finance at the global level and in Kenya and Zambia.

Collaborating partners: University of Lund, Stockholm Environment Institute, Peace Research Institute Oslo, and DIIS.

Funding: Swedish Research Council.

Duration: 2018-2020.

Tendering Sustainable Energy Transitions (TENTRANS)
This project examines the developmental implications of the Renewable Energy Independent Power Producers Procurement Programme (REIPPPP) implemented in South Africa (SA). It is focused on the effects of wind power projects on local industrial, socioeconomic and institutional development.

Collaborating partners: UNEP-DTU, University of Cape Town, University of Stellenbosch, the South African and Danish Wind Associations, and DIIS.

Funding: Danish Consultative Research Committee for Development Research (FFU).

Duration: 2018-2021.
