DIIS Policy Brief

Give city networks a voice in urban development

Cities are preparing for the UN Habitat III Conference

In October 2016, the UN member states will gather in Quito, Ecuador, to discuss the 'New Urban Agenda' at the Habitat III conference. This new DIIS Policy Brief suggeststhat the member states work to give city-to city networks more voice in the implementation of the Sustainable Development Goals 2015-2030.

Over the past 10-20 years, a number of city networks have organized to develop their own approaches to climate change mitigation, sustainable development, urban governance etc., and they have worked to have a seat at the table where the future international policies on sustainable urban development will be negotiated at Habitat III.

The Policy Brief gives an introduction to the issues at stake for the city networks and how they are positioning themselves in the process leading up to the conference.
