Security Providers: A Pluralistic Approach

Article by Bjørn Møller in On Strategy

A new anthology with the title: "On Strategy". Strategic Theory and Contemporary African Armed Conflicts contains an article by senior researcher Bjørn Møller (Defence and Security) on “Security Providers: a Pluralistic Approach?”

It begins with a mapping of the concept of security (Whose security? From whom or what? Of what kind?) with a view to identify the providers of security in present-day Africa. The analysis clearly shows that this very much depends on the concrete setting. Sometimes state institutions such as the army and police are the main providers, but at least as often they represent threats to the security of their citizens, while private or non-state institutions are those, who actually protect the civilian population in the various African countries, but even institutions which initially provide security may develop into security threats. The book is edited by Francois Vrey, Thomas Mandrup and Abel Esterhuyse og published by SUN MeDIA Stellenbosch, South Africa.
