Norden exceptional? Yes - but originated from traditional power calculation

Debate on the Scandinavian international society
As part of a book forum in International Politics Reviews (2013, 1, 49-62) dealing with Laust Schouenborg’s volume ‘The Scandinavian International Society’ (London: Routledge), Hans Mouritzen has contributed the essay ‘Norden Exceptional? Yes – but originated from traditional power calculation’. The main disagreement with Schouenborg concerns the origin of the Nordic security community in the mid 1930s: was it created by the advent of the Scandinavian welfare state (Schouenborg) or by external stimuli: German and Soviet assertiveness (Mouritzen) – in combination with the pre-existing linguistic and cultural community (Scandinavia and the Fenno-Swedes). The book forum also includes essays by Shogo Suzuki, Annika Bergman Rosamond, Anders Wivel as well as a reply by Laust Schouenborg.
