Italians will go to the polls on September 25th to elect a new Parliament and government. The election brings to an abrupt halt the premiership of Mario Draghi, the former European Central Bank president, whose authoritative tenure won plaudits both for its steering of the COVID-19 pandemic and for the principled stance in Russia’s war on Ukraine.

The polls indicate a large margin of advantage for a right-wing coalition led by the post-fascist Fratelli d’Italia, the anti-immigrant Lega and Forza Italia led by octogenarian former Prime Minister Silvio Berlusconi. No matter its final set-up the constellation is likely to change radically the course of the country on anything from EU economic policy to immigration, with big clouds over hovering over the coalition’s stance on the Russia’s war on Ukraine.

This seminar will bring a conversation on the likely consequences of the election with Fabrizio Tassinari, author and Executive Director of the School of Transnational Governance at the European University Institute in Florence, Italy. He will talk about his latest book, “The Pursuit of Governance”.

Marlene Wind will talk about the European perspective and what the election means for the EU in the current situation and the difference between the North and the South.

Alberte Bové Rud will give a short presentation of the parties, Fratelli d’Italia and internal power dynamics of the Italian right-coalition followed by an analysis of the current popularity of the right.
