New Book: Securitizing Immigration. The Politics of Risk in the EU

In the Series: Palgrave Studies in International Relations

In Securitizing Immigration, Rens van Munster develops an original framework for analyzing why immigration has become increasingly central in EU policy-making as an issue that requires new, often coercive, forms of control. While the effectiveness of these practices of control is debatable, they have a crucial impact upon the lives of immigrants. Moreover, the securitization of immigration also has profound political implications for the EU itself. Van Munster shows how the EU is increasingly thought of as a place of unease, where individuals are integrated mainly through their concerns and worries about undocumented immigrants and other unwanted forms of mobility. This book critically discusses these tendencies and considers other, less exclusive forms of European belonging.
