The murder that questions Europe's Arab policy

The assassination of a PhD student in Egypt shows limitations of EU repertoire

In this new commentary for the Huffington Post, Senior Researcher Fabrizio Tassinari argues that exactly five years since the start of the Arab spring, Europe’s policy has come full circle.

On 25January 2016, Giulio Regeni, an Italian PhD student in Egypt, was tortured and murdered in Cairo. Since then, any Italian attempt to cooperate with Egypt on the investigation have been met with deceptions and delays. Yet, Italy and Europe can only contemplate a limited range of “proportional” responses that do not rock the stability that they covet in the region.

Any quantum leap in Europe’s regional approach might take inspiration from the work that Regeni was carrying out in Egypt, Tassinari writes.
