Lurking Beneath the Surface

High-Valued Natural Resources and Post-Conflict Peacebuilding
The new edited volume High-Value Natural Resources and Post-conflict Peacebuilding examines the experiences of over a dozen post-conflict countries in managing natural resources such as oil and minerals. In his chapter, Lurking Beneath the Surface, DIIS researcher Luke Patey explains how environmental degradation in Sudan's oil sector remains a source of strife and conflict between oil companies and local populations. He warns that both the government of Sudan, and the newly independent South Sudan, will continue to face this threat if environmental management is not taken prioritized.
