The governance of a Trump precursor

The normative usefulness of the Berlusconi parallel

In his latest contribution for the Huffington Post, Senior Researcher Fabrizio Tassinari argues that the many parallels made in the public discourse between the rise of Donald J. Trump and Silvio Berlusconi’s tenure in Italy are flawed, except for one aspect: the extent to which good governance can help expose conflicts of interest, as well as ineptitude of the ruling class.

Tassinari dwells on the concept 'bureaucratic autonomy', which is measured by the extent the civil service is protected and thus not influenced by political decisions. This is what ultimately caused Berlusconi’s demise and can provide a cautionary tale for Americans in the years to come.
