The European Political Community: putting politics first?
Watch the recording of the webinar here
As a response to Russia´s invasion of Ukraine, French President Emmanuel Macron in May 2022 proposed to establish "a new European organization" that would allow countries "that subscribe to our shared core values to find a new space for cooperation" on politics, security, energy, infrastructure, investment, and migration.
The European Political Community (EPC) was launched in Prague last fall. It comprises 44 European heads of state and government, including all 27 Member States of the EU, as well as governments of neighbouring European countries, most notably the United Kingdom, Ukraine, Turkey, the Western Balkans and Southern Caucuasus nations. Most recently it convened in Chișinău Moldova on June 1st.
Presently the EPC is a platform, rather than a fully fledged organization, but beyond unity and defiance of Russia in this critical historical juncture, the EPC raises unanswered questions about the power constellation of the wider Europe, the continent’s security architecture, as well as the institutional realignment (including EU and NATO membership) needed to match the scale and magnitude of the shock imposed by Russia.
In this webinar we will address a number of these questions:
- what is the role of the EPC?
- what are its strengths and weaknesses?
- what does the EPC tell us about the future of Europe?
- and what will its success or failure look like?
