Rights and resilience

Exploring the links between climate change adaptation and land rights
Kenya

Tuesday 7 September 2021, 13.00-16.00
DIIS ∙ Danish Institute for International Studies

Auditorium

Climate change undermines food security and poverty alleviation and can contribute to displacement and conflict. Denmark’s new strategy for development cooperation pledges to engage substantially in supporting climate change adaptation and increasing resilience, and a growing amount of funds are being directed towards climate change adaptation activities around the globe.

However, support to climate change adaptation requires an understanding of the ways in which communities across the Global South are trying to adapt, and how their adaptation strategies interact with broader political, social and economic changes and policies.

This seminar presents emerging insights from the frontline of climate change on the importance of land rights in climate change adaptation and resilience. The seminar draws on findings from the Rights and Resilience (RARE) research programme in Kenya, where one of Africa’s first Climate Acts is being implemented alongside new land laws.

Focusing especially on pastoralist adaptation strategies, the seminar will discuss how adaptation can change people’s priorities and needs, how adaptation strategies interact with land conflicts and land reforms, and what the consequences are for efforts to support land rights for resilient development.

The RARE project is funded by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Denmark and administered by Danida Fellowship Centre.
