DIIS and Ban Ki-Moon opened UN’s Global Migration Film Festival

New narratives on migration through film

Together with former General Secretary to the United Nations Ban Ki-Moon, DIIS Senior Researcher Sine Plambech opened the UN Global Migration Film Festival in Bangkok, Thailand.

Ban Ki-Moon spoke on the importance of appreciation for migrants and their contributions to society. Sine Plambech spoke on the importance of new narratives on migration, and UN’s and IOM’s and other central actors role in providing the platforms for these counter narratives.

After the opening ceremony Sine Plambech's film HEARTBOUND was screened with introduction by Danish Ambassador to Thailand Uffe Wolffhechel.

The Global Migration Film Festival (GMFF) is a world wide festival featuring films and documentaries that capture the promise and challenges of migration, and the unique contributions that migrants make to their new communities. The goal of the festival is to pave the way for greater discussion around one of the greatest phenomenon of our time.

The festival is an innovative creative avenue for normalizing discussions of migration through storytelling, and it is an advocacy tool that can also draw attention to the United Nations’ Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), thus helping all nations as they work to meet them.
