Call for papers: Adversaries, Neighbors, Kins? Tensions and Security Potentials in Turkey and the Eurasian Region

MICS - Europe, Turkey and Eurasia
A Nordic Network for Research onMigration, Identity, Communication, and Security
Swedish Research Institute in Istanbul, Danish Institute for International Studies, Roskilde University, Malmö University

A workshop organized by the Nordic network MICS will be held on November 19-20 at the Danish Institute for International Studies, Copenhagen, addressing the issue of security in the Eurasian region both from a contemporary and a historical perspective.

The role of Turkey as a crucial player for stability and security in the Eurasian region has led to a series of new questions regarding Turkey and its relations with its neighbors. Some are strangers, some are neighbors, and some are historically considered to be kins. To what extent are these relations changing? What is based on old habits and good neighborhood policy, and where do traditions cause problems rather advantages?

The November workshop in Copenhagen will explore the tensions and security potentials in Turkey and the Eurasian region. It will examine the changes in Turkey’s relations with Russia, the EU, and other neighbors. It will also address the issue of security from a domestic point of view, asking to what extent security has become a theme in Turkish society as well.

MICS is a research network for studies on Migration, Identity, Communication, and Security as interdependent and increasingly crucial aspects of present-day societies. The present workshop on security will be the concluding one in a series of 4 workshops devoted to these themes. If you want to contribute to our next meeting, please, send an abstract to cfb@diis.dk. Deadline 1 October 2015.
