Book for educators about intolerance

DIIS has launched a compilation of educational resources for teaching about different forms of intolerance

In 2014 DIIS published a handbook for teachers about intolerance entitled “Forskellighed og fordomme – en lærebog til grundskolen om intolerance”, written by Stine Thuge (DIIS) and Tine Brøndum (Southern University of Denmark). The book is supplemented by online material for pupils available at DIIS’ educational website: www.folkedrab.dk/forskellighed

The book takes a horizontal perspective on intolerance by dealing with themes and aspects related to intolerance, exemplified and illustrated by historical and contemporary cases from different minority groups: Jews, Muslims, LGBT and Roma.  It investigates issues such as categorization, majority/minority relations, fundamental rights, hate crimes, discrimination, propaganda, extremism and genocide.

The book for educators consists of:

  • 11 chapters dealing with themes, concepts and cases
  • Recommendations for teaching about intolerance
  • A collection of 35 assignments for classroom use
  • A dictionary explaining difficult words (for pupils)

The book can be ordered by teachers for free or downloaded at DIIS’ website.
