The war in Gaza has already proven to be of great importance to the entire Middle East: the Houthis in Yemen, in solidarity with the Palestinians, are attacking commercial ships in the Red Sea, there are reciprocal military strikes across the border between Lebanon and Israel, pro-Iranian militias in Syria and Iraq have attacked US interests, leading to US and Israeli retaliation and, most recently, a threatening escalation in the Israeli-Iran conflict to escalate into open war, where the United States and other states might be involved.

This seminar will discuss the broad impact of the war on the region. Where do the Arab states stand in this area of conflict, both those that have established diplomatic relations with Israel and those that have not? How is the conflict discussed in Arab and Iranian media and what are the debates among Middle Eastern populations? The conflict is pushing an increasing difference between the West and the Global South in interpreting the global order. How is the situation discussed by Arab intellectuals and what geopolitical consequences can be drawn for the Middle East in international politics?
