A partner in dire straits? A European perspective on Taiwan

In the past few years, Taiwan has attracted growing attention from Europe, including the Nordic region. Apart from its geopolitical centrality in the US-China rivalry, Taiwan has made headlines because of its indispensable role as a high-tech fabrication hub for the world's most advanced semi-conductors and its astonishing transformation into a liberal beacon of democracy in a region shaped by the rise of an authoritarian China. Meanwhile, Taiwan's own relationship with China has become increasingly tense since the current Taiwanese DPP government came into power in 2016. 

Against the backdrop of Taiwan's presidential election on 13 January, this DIIS seminar takes a closer look at recent developments in Cross-Strait relations and the wider Taiwan conflict as seen from a European perspective. The seminar asks how the EU and individual European countries are currently approaching Taiwan and how Taipei has been navigating the US-China rivalry as well as Beijing's intensified isolation and intimidation campaign. It also offers some early analysis of the presidential election in Taiwan, including its potential international implications. 

To discuss these and other questions, DIIS has invited Meia Nouwens, one of Europe's leading scholars on Taiwan and Cross-Strait relations.
