Andreas Bøje Forsby

Andreas Bøje Forsby is a Senior Researcher in the Foreign Policy & Diplomacy research unit at the Danish Institute for International Studies (DIIS) and a Guest Researcher at the Nordic Institute of Asian Studies (NIAS). He received his PhD degree in 2016 from University of Copenhagen based on a dissertation entitled “The Logic of Social Identity: China’s Identity and Grand Strategy in the 21st Century”. Forsby is an International Relations (IR) scholar who, drawing mostly on realist and constructivist IR theory, specializes in US-China relations, security dynamics in the Indo-Pacific region, and Chinese foreign and security policy. His research covers a variety of related topics such as Danish/Nordic-Chinese relations, the Taiwan conflict, maritime conflicts in the South China Sea, the strategic partnership between China and Russia, and the role played by identity and emotions in China’s external relations.

In 2023, Forsby received a large grant from Independent Research Fund Denmark (DFF) to conduct a three-years research project with the title “RED LINES: China’s Emotional Assertiveness against Western Non-State Actors”. As a member of the European Think-tank Network on China (ETNC) since 2016, he has contributed to its annual reports on relations between Europe and China. Forsby is a frequently cited expert in the Danish media and often writes op-eds and policy analysis in Danish newspapers and magazines. He has previously taught a range of IR courses at University of Copenhagen and regularly undertakes policy-oriented reports and policy briefs for the Danish Ministry of Defense.
