DIIS and Yangon University signs agreement on joint research

4-year research project on local dispute resolution and customary law in Myanmar

DIIS has signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with the Yangon University in Myanmar as part of a 4-year research project with the title ’Everday Justice and Security in the Myanmar Transition’ (EverJust). The project is the first larger Danish collaborative research project in Myanmar.

The project explores how disputes, law breaks and insecurity are dealt with at the local level and by whom. It will particularly look at customary law and practices among ethnic groups in South East Myanmar, where state institutions co-exist with a range of ethnic, customary and other informal actors. The theoretical aim is to improve legal anthropological understandings of how authority is produced in contexts where various sources of legitimacy and norms co-exist.

EverJust supports Myanmar researchers with different training activities and materials, as well as through joint field research, publications and participation in international conferences. Apart from the department of anthropology at Yangon University, DIIS also collaborates with Enlightened Myanmar Research (EMR), and Aarhus University.

The project is financed by Danida and is coordinated by DIIS senior researcher, Helene Maria Kyed.
