Biodiversity conservation in the context of poverty, greed and weak institutions

Results from the Danida-funded IBESo research programme
In collaboration with Nicaraguan and Danish research colleagues, researchers at DIIS have undertaken research in the Biological Reserve Indio Maíz and its buffer zone in El Castillo in Río San Juan in South Eastern Nicaragua on the conservation of biodiversity as part of the IBESo research programme, funded by Danida.

The research results are summarized in an English language DIIS brief and in a Spanish language synthesis report (Helle Munk Ravnborg with colleagues). DIIS researchers have focussed in particular on the role of social capital in shaping the participation of the local population in the protection of Indio Maíz and the dilemmas faced by frontline workers of the environmental authorities responsible for the protection of the Biological Reserve Indio Maíz as documented in the following publications:
