The European Parliamentary election: Views from 13 European capitals

The EP election turned out differently around Europe. DIIS Researcher Christine Nissen looks at the Danish election.


The Danish election results on 26 May run counter to the nationalist, inward-looking anti-EU narrative that has affected western politics in recent years.

The winners of the Danish EU election were parties proclaiming that some of Denmark’s essential challenges are climate, migration and safety, and that as these challenges are transnational, they can only be solved at the European level.

The election result also showcased the highest ever voter turnout in the history of Danish EU elections, where especially young voters from the major cities came out to vote. At 66% the Danish turnout was the fourth highest in the EU, only surpassed by Belgium, Luxembourg and Malta.
