Sea control 205

Women in maritime security with Dr. Ruxandra Bosilca and Dr. Jessica Larsen

The shipping industry and its related maritime sectors are male-dominated.

Only two percent of the world’s 1.2 million seafarers today are women. In Denmark, that figure is 3 percent. The International Maritime Organisation has launched a gender programme, and the shipping industry in Denmark is also engaged in strengthening the position of women in the maritime sector. But with the current statistics, more clearly needs to be done.

Listen to the conversation between DIIS researcher Jessica Larsen and Dr. Ruxandra Boșilcă (Center for International Maritime Security) in a new podcast on women in the maritime. As researchers in maritime security, the two women discuss the barriers that women face in the maritime sector and how the so-called ‘Blue Denmark’ is involved in creating gender equality.

Jessica shares her experiences as a female researcher in maritime security and reflects on ways to overcome bias and discrimination.
