Book Chapter

Positioning in an Insecure field

Reflections on Negotiating Identity

In this book chapter featured in a new book published by Bristol University Press, "Doing Fieldwork in Areas of International Intervention. A Guide to Research in Violent and Closed Contexts", DIIS-Researcher Maria-Louise Clausen discusses questions of closeness and distance between researcher and researched. The chapter focuses on three key themes that shaped fieldwork in the midst of an internationally supported transition and a deteriorating security situation; namely questions of gender, power and the inside/outside distinction. The chapter is a self-critical account of mistakes, dilemmas and reflections that arise when doing fieldwork in insecure settings.
