Podcast on new book on Everyday Justice in Myanmar

The Nordic Asia Podcast

In this podcast, the director of the Nordic Institute for Asia Studies (NIAS), Duncan McCargo interviews Helene Maria Kyed (DIIS) about a new book that she edited, titled ‘Everyday Justice in Myanmar. Informal Resolutions and State Evasion in a time of contested transition’ (NIAS Press, September 2020). Kyed shares her insights on the project behind the book, and on justice and informal resolutions in Myanmar. Based on a unique collection of ethnographic studies, the book is the first to explore how ordinary people in Myanmar access justice and resolves disputes. The chapters in the book cover various areas of Myanmar, including Karen, Mon, Pa-O, Naga and the city of Yangon.

The book is based on research conducted under the DIIS-coordinated research project, ‘Everyday Justice and Security in the Myanmar Transition’ (EverJust), which is done in partnership with Yangon University, the Enlightened Myanmar Research Foundation, and Aarhus University. It is funded by the Danish Ministry of Foreign Affairs through the development research grant.
