New DIIS research on EU's asylum and immigration policy

Contributions by Thomas Gammeltoft-Hansen in two new books

DIIS researcher Thomas Gammeltoft-Hansen has contributed chapters to two new books in which he examines the interaction between law and politics in the establishment of EU's asylum and immigration policy. In particular, he focuses on the foreign policy dimension of the traditionally domestic issue of asylum and immigration.

The first book, titled The First Decade of EU Asylum and Immigration Law (edited by Elspeth Guild and Paul Minderhoud), has been compiled to celebrate the ten year anniversary of the European Journal of Migration and Law, which was established to examine the intertwining of issues of law and migration in the EU. The journal itself is the basis for the book: authors who have written the most significant contributions for the journal on the relevant issues to the Area of Freedom Security and Justice (AFSJ) have revised and updated their articles in light of current developments. It offers a unique and lively collection of essays covering the field of EU immigration and asylum law from a variety of perspectives.

The second book, Europe in the World (edited by Luiza Bialasciewicz), focuses on European geopolitics by tracing some of the new political geographies and geographical imaginations emergent within - and made possible by - the EU's actions in the international arena. The question of EU border management is a particularly important concern of several contributions, highlighting some of the ways in which the Union's border-work is actively (re)making the European space.
