Gendering genocide

New article asks "What is the sex doing in the genocide?"

The Special Issue "Gendering Genocide" just published in the European Journal of Women's Studies reflects on the 20th century as a century of genocide and looks into the 21st century debates on the intersections of genocide and gender. Whereas Holocaust and genocide studies has earlier not considered issues of gender to be central to understanding the dynamics of violence, the achievement of a generation of feminist scholars has substantially changed historical, political, legal, and philosophical research in this field.

In her article "'What is the sex doing in the genocide?' A feminist philosophical response' Senior Researcher Robin May Schott provides a critical review of the major positions in feminist studies of genocide to argue that sexual violence is integral to genocidal violence. She argues that it is necessary to reconceptualize sexual violence in feminist debates and beyond, with a focus on the politics of natality, also to more adequately address sexual violence against boys and men.
