Power, practice and theory in international relations

Power, theory and practice are each central concepts for the scholarly development of the international relations discipline. But they are also empirical phenomena, central for understanding how international relations unfolds 'out there', both 'on its own' but particularly as it is shaped by scholarly understandings feeding back. International relations scholarship is not just an intellectual exercise but partakes in shaping the ever-changing reality of our world.
Looking back at the advances in our understanding of international relations over the last few decades, Stefano Guzzini's contributions are central, when it comes to all these three core concepts. Writing his dissertation at the European University Institute (EUI) in Florence and establishing IR at the Central European University (CEU) in the crucial years after 1989; as well as conducting research at Copenhagen Peace Research Institute and later Danish Institute for International Studies while teaching, supervising, and mentoring at universities across and beyond Europe, Stefano has been shaping the discipline both in terms of scholarly substance and form.
As Stefano will now leave DIIS for a Chair in Political and Social Theory at the EUI, we take the occasion to appraise his scholarly influence at a seminar focusing on power, theory and practice, followed by a reception.
