This DIIS seminar focuses on the interception of socioeconomic inequality, international migration, and ethnoracial stratification in the United States – the country with the largest number of international immigrants in the world, a significantly high and rapidly growing diverse population, and a history of unequal development.

Most existing studies and policies conceive of national immigrant groups as racially homogeneous, assume that human capital is the best predictor of immigrants’ incorporation in the host society, and only consider inequality between groups. Contrary to dominant interpretations of race as an independent variable shaping inequality, Professor Luis E. Guarnizo’s work shows that racial effects on the distribution of societal rewards are not fixed, but variable and mediated by ethnicity (i.e., groups national origin) in a process dubbed ethnoracialization. Instead of focusing on what an ethnic or racial group is, Guarnizo’s work attempts to specify how the intersection of ethnicity and race work in structuring inequality. How such a focus can inform analysis of migrant incorporation in Europe and Denmark will form part of the discussion.

How does inequality and international migration intersect? What role does race and ethnicity play? This DIIS seminar sheds light on such processes by introducing the concept of ethnoracialisation. Instead of focusing on what an ethic or racial group is, invited guest speaker Professor Luis E. Guarnizo will explain how the intersection of race and ethnicity work in restructuring inequality. The following dialogue will be moderated by Senior Researcher Ninna Nyberg Sørensen.
