The deterioration of the security and humanitarian situation following the 2011 outbreak of the Syria conflict has forced 5.6 million Syrians to flee and seek refuge mainly in neighbouring countries, including Lebanon and Jordan. Amongst them are some 70,000 Palestine refugees from Syria, who have therefore become “double refugees”. Both Lebanon and Jordan have seen several waves of refugees settle in their camps and urban setting, adding pressure on economies that were already fragile. Lebanon is at a particularly alarming stage with a quasi-collapse of its political, economic and financial structures.

A situation that exacerbated the pre-existing challenges in a country already struggling with a weak economy and complex national and regional political situations.

At this webinar, UNRWA Commissioner General Philippe Lazzarini brings into play more than thirty years of personal experience in humanitarian assistance and international coordination in conflict and post-conflict areas reflecting on the challenges that seem to face Palestine refugees at every turn in a region that is constantly volatile. His presentation will be followed by a dialogue with Lars Erslev Andersen, Senior Researcher at DIIS with expertise on the Palestinian conflict.
