In this webinar hosted by the London School of Economics (LSE), we will discuss the new book ‘Everyday Justice in Myanmar. Informal Resolutions and State Evasion in a time of contested Transition’ (NIAS Press, September 2020). The editor of the book Helene Maria Kyed (DIIS) and Mi Thang Sorn Poine (EMReF, Myanmar) will present the main findings from the book and selected case studies. The event will be moderated by Hans Steinmüller who is Associate Professor in anthropology at the LSE. Daniel Aguirre, a Senior Lecturer in Law from the University of Roehampton and Michael W. Charney, who is Professor of Asian and Military History at SOAS, London, will act as discussants.

Based on a unique collection of ethnographic studies, the ‘Everyday Justice in Myanmar’ book is the first to explore how ordinary people in Myanmar access justice and resolves disputes. The empirical insights shed light on wider dynamic of state-citizen relations, identity politics and legal pluralism.

The book is based on research conducted under the DIIS-coordinated research project, ‘Everyday Justice and Security in the Myanmar Transition’ (EverJust), which is done in partnership with Yangon University, the Enlightened Myanmar Research Foundation, and Aarhus University. It is funded by the Danish Ministry of Foreign Affairs through the development research grant.
