Pressure on Europe as Asylum-Seekers Risk Everything to Reach Safety in Italy
Senior Researcher Hans Lucht recently contributed an opinion piece to openDemocracy on the EU-African migration crisis in the Mediterranean. Lucht argues that the instability in Libya contributes to the current surge in asylum-seekers, and that the many boat disasters put Europe under pressure to live up to its own humanitarian commitments. Unfortunately, the challenge posed by African and Asian asylum-seerks is not going to disappear any time soon, and while Europe argues over who should welcome them, Libya descends further into anarchy.
