Sexual Violence from the Holocaust to the Contemporary Security Agenda

2015 marks the 70th anniversary of the liberation of the concentration camp in Auschwitz-Birkenau, as well as the liberation of Denmark from the German occupation.

Following WWII the mantra “Never Again” was echoed by intellectuals world-wide. But genocide was recognized as an issue of international security subsequent to the wars in former-Yugoslavia in the 1990’s and the Rwandan genocide of 1994. The widespread use of sexual violence in these recent conflicts has led to a new interest in the role of sexual violence during the Holocaust as well.

These issues were highlighted earlier this year in the DIIS seminar, “Sexual Violence from the Holocaust to the Contemporary Security Agenda.” The full seminar presentations from scholars working with military history, social history, and philosophy are now available for viewing.
