How does the EU's migration agenda influence policy-making in Africa and the Middle East?

Migration is key for economic development in Sub-Saharan Africa and the Middle East and North Africa. It may therefore seem paradoxical that countries within these regions cooperate with the EU on policies to reduce migration and increase returns. While international collaboration has become essential in migration management, the incentives, implementation and broader impact of EU migration measures in partner countries remain largely unexplored.

EFFEXT is a new interdisciplinary research project (2020-2024) funded by Nordforsk that explores the broader landscape of migration policy in Africa and the Middle East. The aim is to produce knowledge on the dynamics of migration and the local effects of the EU’s external migration management in Lebanon, Jordan, Ethiopia, Senegal, Ghana and Libya.

EFFEXT's research and findings will provide policymakers with a renewed understanding of the impact of the EU's external border control measures and contribute to theory building in an under-explored area.

DIIS researchers Hans Lucht and Ida Marie Savio Vammen is part of the team of eight researchers with strong experience and competence in the fields of migration.

The project is a collaboration between Danish Institute of International Studies, Chr. Michelsen Institute in Norway and Oxford Brookes University, the Centre for Development and Emergency Practice; and the University of Manchester’s Global Development Institute in the UK.

You can find out more about the project and follow the project developments on our website or Twitter.
