New challenges to food security

DIIS convenes panel at the World Conference on Humanitarian Studies
How should we understand food security in a changing world? This was the overall theme at a panel hosted by DIIS researchers at the recent World Conference on Humanitarian Studies in Istanbul.

Debates on food security have traditionally tended to focus fairly narrowly on improving farmer’s yields, enhancing national self-sufficiency and the modalities of delivering food aid. But while these issues remain critical, it is also becoming increasingly clear that a more multi-facetted perspective is needed.

The panel provided examples of this through presentations on how food security relates to climate change, armed conflict, water conflict and other issues. The panel included researchers working in the DIIS-coordinated research programme Climate Change and Rural Institutions.

The papers presented in the panel will be included in a book on the new challenges to food security, currently under preparation. For more information, please contact Ian Christoplos
