Liberal international order

Keynote speech at convention of Polish Society of International Studies

On 12 November 2015, Stefano Guzzini opened the 5thconvention of the Polish Society of International Studies in Gdańsk dedicated to liberalism in international relations with a keynote on ‘Liberal International Order’.

In a first part he showed that there are several ways in which (different) liberal ideas can provide the basis of international orders: the pluralism of Westphalian sovereignty, multilateral internationalism, Liberal Empires, and Kantian integration. In a second part, he argued that the study of these orders within the liberal paradigm tend to concentrate on the steering capacity of the orderers and the normative content of the order. It thereby neglects the understanding of the specific mechanisms of informal rule and their power, both in global markets and the mobilisation of exclusionary discourses.
