Europe must sustain the pressure on Egypt

Open letter to European leaders from the European Working Group on Egypt

Senior Researcher at the Danish Institute for International Studies, Rasmus Alenius Boserup, co-signs an open letter to European decision-makers warning about the gravity of the political situation in Egypt.

In collaboration with a number of prominent European scholars and experts the co-signatories call for European leaders not take the announced parliamentary elections as a rubber stamp for the reinstatement of democratic governance in the conflict-torn Arab country.

European leaders should sustain their pressure on the Egyptian government to roll back new laws and practices that undermine fundamental freedoms and spark conflict and terrorism. There should be no de facto acceptance of the current political repression as a “new normal” in Egyptian politics.

The letter is co-signed by representatives from several of the foremost European think tanks and research institutions including the European Council of Foreign Relations, Carnegie Endowment Europe, and International Crisis Group.
