EU pulling together after Brexit

Europe conference featured in the New York Times

Europe may be witnessing a renationalisation of policy making in face of Brexit and the Refugee crisis, but the longer trend that these epochal events highlight is in fact a continued Europeanization of national politics. This was one of the key findings of the 40 year anniversary conference of the European Community Studies Association, which DIIS organized on October 6-7, together with the department of Political Science at the University of Copenhagen.

The conference included some 13 academic panels featuring a keynote speech by Prof Frank Schimmelfennig from ETH Zürich and a public debate which took place at the Alexander Hall of the University.

Some of the conference highlights, and particularly the public debate including among others Ulrik Vestergaard Knudsen, the Permanent Secretary of State at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, were featured in a column published on the New York Times by Alison Smale, the paper's Berlin bureau chief, another of the conference participants.
