Can Europe confound its foreign policy critics?

Commentary in the Huffington Post on the recent EU top appointments

Senior Researcher Fabrizio Tassinari authored a commentary for the Huffington Post (U.S. edition) on the challenges to European foreign relations in light of the recent appointment of a new EU’s High Representative for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy.

The article argues that EU’s foreign policy problems lie not with personalities but in how Europe’s values, interests, and ambitions fit in an increasingly unruly neighborhood. Tassinari argues that, among other things, the incoming High Representative, Italian foreign minister Federica Mogherini, will need to focus on a handful of priorities where her voice can be distinctive, such as the Mediterranean, Russia and Iran, as well as forge a narrative that can translate in simple terms the groundwork carried out by the 6000-odd staffers of the External Action Service, Europe’s putative diplomatic service.

The commentary is part of the WorldPost a partnership between the Huffington Post and the Berggruen Institute of Governance.
