Architects and Development

Building Houses in Sierra Leone

In Africa, the Middle East, Asia and Denmark Architecture sans Frontières Denmark (ASF-DK) has built and advised people who normally do not have access to professional architects since 2008.

A book has now been published about some of these projects. In Sierra Leone, 5 building projects are being finalized. They are analyzed from a variety of perspectives, including drawings, visualizations, photos and interviews with local partners and other people who were involved in the projects. In addition, experts, including from DIIS, put the work of the architects in the context of how politics and power work in Sierra Leone.

The book is for everyone who is curious about how architects can be part of development work and what their contribution is in a resource scarce environment.

Peter Albrecht, researcher at DIIS, has contributed the article How Power Works in Sierra Leone to the book.
