16 days of activism and the International Human Rights days in Ethiopia

TV show on gender-based violence and ways to combat it

Every year the UN backed campaign called 16 days of activism highlights the curse of gender-based violence and the need to mobilise against it. In 2020 it has been even more necessary than ever given the alarming reports from all parts of the world that the COVID-19 pandemic and the associated lock-downs have stimulated gender-based violence within the family.

Anchinesh Shiferaw, a lecturer at Addis Ababa University and member of the GLOW research programme on Global Norms and Violence against Women in Ethiopia, participated in a TV show held in Amharic language on gender-based violence and human rights on 22 December 2020. The show was organised by the Center for Human Rights of Addis Ababa University and Raoul Wallenberg Institute in collaboration with Fana Broadcasting Corporate. The channel has national coverage in Ethiopia, and the discussion covered various aspects, including the nature of gender-based violence at home and in the public, its prevalence and implications for women in Ethiopia, the responsibilities of different institutions, the role of men and fathers, and the initiatives seeking to combat it.
