Shock mobility

Crises like pandemics, as well as natural disasters and sudden social conflicts, trigger new dramatic patterns of mobilities. These mobilities save lives and ameliorate shocks but can also exacerbate anxieties and complicate rescue operations. Existing research on related phenomena has primarily focused on the causes (e.g. “climate migration,” “distress migration”) or solutions (e.g. refugee resettlement), instead of the process of movement itself. What are the typical patterns of shock mobilities and how should we conceptualize them?

During the webinar Professor Biao Xiang, will share his current work on mobilities and restrictions during SARS and Coronavirus. His talk will be followed by a conversation with Ninna Nyberg Sørensen and a Q&A session with those attending the webinar.

DIIS invites to the first webinar in our Migration Seminar series. Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, several planned seminars have had to be cancelled or rescheduled. While we wait for the possibility to host public seminars in our auditorium, we launch the series as online events. The first event discusses migration in the light of the corona crisis.
