New podcast explores protection of civilians in the Sahel

DIIS researchers talk to Oxford Research Group

In this conversation with Liam Walpole from the Oxford Research Group, DIIS researchers Peter Albrecht and Signe Cold-Ravnkilde talk about the many challenges regarding protection of civilians in the Sahel and the broader West African region.

What are the challenges when it comes to protecting civilians? What needs to change with current international approaches to mitigate against dangers to civilians? And how well do local, national, and international actors coordinate their efforts?

While many international organizations and individual governments are engaged across the Sahel, they are often more focused on fighting jihadists than protecting civilians. This means that too little emphasis is put on protecting civilians in a region where conflict patterns are complex, reaching from the local level across borders. Certainly, conflict dynamics in the Sahel have the potential to destabilize West Africa as a whole.
