More democracies in a Global NATO may lead to less legitimacy

New DIIS Report argues that NATO should tread cautiously towards a new global role

DIIS researchers Trine Flockhart and Kristian Søby Kristensen argue in a new DIIS Report “NATO and global Partnerships - to be global or to act globally?” that the future of NATO depends on the ability of the Alliance to combine a strategy of intervention - to act globally, with a broad strategy of integration - to be global. If NATO were to emphasize only the strategy of integration it would create a legitimacy deficit and increase tension with NATO's non-democratic partners.
