The Winter 2017 issue of Connections is dedicated to the controversies between al-Qaeda (AQ) and Islamic State (IS) and their historical, ideological or geographical affiliates. The papers in this special issue cover three main topics: (1) Historical, ideological and conceptual foundations of existing controversies; (2) Interactions between IS and AQ in Syria, Iraq and other key geographic areas - Afghanistan/Pakistan, Yemen, North Africa and Sahel, Caucasus and Central Asia, and (3) Varying perspectives on foreign fighters and women's roles in Jihad.

The special issue includes contributions from seven DIIS researchers: Manni Crone, Flemming Splidsboel Hansen,Lars Erslev Andersen, Mona Kanwal Sheikh, Maja Touzari Greenwood, Andrea Sjøberg Aasgaard and Maria-Louise Clausen.
