PhD Students

You will be employed on a three-year contract at DIIS and enrolled at a Danish university. You will be assigned to a research unit that matches your subject area and you will be assigned a colleague who will act as a co-supervisor during your three-year PhD programme and ensure that you receive ongoing feedback and discussion/sparring opportunities.

Three different ways to be considered as a PhD student:

1. Non-university PhD grant holders

Most of our PhD students are employed on projects funded by Independent Research Fund Denmark (DFF), which awards funding annually for PhD projects outside of universities. DIIS nominates three candidates to DFF each year. If you have a good idea for a project that complements DIIS' research, please contact the relevant unit manager at DIIS. As the application process is long, it is important that you contact us as early as possible. If we find your project interesting, we will support you in preparing an application. It is important that your project idea is well thought out and supports DIIS' ongoing research.

2. PhD positions funded by DIIS

Occasionally, DIIS invites applications for pre-defined PhD projects that are part of larger research projects or programmes. Keep abreast of these opportunities under vacancies.

3. PhD positions as part of larger research projects

Finally, some of our PhD students are employed on the basis of specific project collaborations with senior researchers at DIIS. In this case, research project applications are formulated in close collaboration with a senior researcher and your PhD project will be included as part of the senior researcher's project application.
