Webinar
Rethinking isolationism
Watch the recording of the webinar here
With the election of Joe Biden and his promise of a ‘return to American leadership’, ‘America First’ Trump-style is over. What are the implications? In this webinar, Charles Kupchan, Professor at Georgetown University and previous member of the National Security Council in the Obama White House, presents his newly published book Isolationism: A History of America’s Efforts to Shield Itself From the World (Oxford University Press, 2020), arguing how and why the United States must “rediscover the history of isolationism and apply its lessons, shrinking its footprint abroad and bringing its foreign commitments back into line with its means and purposes”. Following Kupchan’s talk, a broad panel of DIIS-scholars responds, posing questions from the context of a Europe, whose ideological orientations and geopolitical alliances too are in flux.
