American foreign policy in the post-Trump era

Daniel Nexon and Alexander Cooley on Biden and the end of US hegemony

On January 20, 2021, Joe Biden will be sworn into office and the era of Trump’s ‘America First’-foreign policy will be over. Biden has promised a ‘return to American leadership’ – but what forms of American influence are feasible, desirable, or even welcome in the post-Trump era? Domestically. In relation to US European allies. And in the context of a rapidly – and complexly - changing global order.

In this webinar, Alexander Cooley and Daniel Nexon, respectively professors at Columbia University and Georgetown University, present their newly published book Exit From Hegemony: The Unravelling of the American Global Order (Oxford University Press, 2020) and engage in discussion about the global conditions for, and alternative paths of, a post-Trump US foreign policy. Taking place just one day prior to the Biden inauguration, the authors take stock of how and why global power relations, security problems, value alliances, and governance structures have fundamentally changed – and look ahead to what a Biden administration could, might and should do, to shape and navigate this transforming terrain.

Following Cooley and Nexon’s talk, a panel of scholars from DIIS and the University of Copenhagen will respond, posing questions from the context of a Europe, whose outlooks, democracies and alliances, too are in flux.
