DIIS coorganises public seminar on the Hong Kong-crisis
After several months of pro-democracy demonstrations in Hong Kong, unrest in the territory shows no sign of dying down. The protests began in June against a proposed bill to allow extradition to mainland China, due to distrust of the Chinese judicial system among local inhabitants. Although the Hong Kong government recently decided to withdraw the bill, demonstrations continue to demand democratic rights and an independent investigation into police violence. DIIS senior researcher Yang Jiang debates the economic background for the current events in a seminar later this month with a host of other researchers.
The Hong Kong seminar features speakers Miklós Sükösd, Associate Professor, Department of Communication, University of Copenhagen, and Andreas Bøje Forsby, Researcher, Nordic Institute of Asian Studies (NIAS) and external lecturer in IR at Department of Political Science, University of Copenhagen.
The public seminar explores the crisis in Hong Kong from political, economic, cultural and international perspectives. 22 October 2019, 15:00-16:30, at University of Copenhagen South Campus, room 4A-1-15.
