Shifting Sovereignties & PowerThe migration research unit is involved in organizing a cross-DIIS initiative which aims at generating discussions and research ideas on contemporary changes in power and sovereignty. Practices, understandings and effects of sovereignty are in flux as evidenced in regard to migration management, the organization of violence and many other issues. Being a cornerstone of the international system, changes in sovereign orders and the system of sovereign, territorial states have implications for the generation of conflicts as well as the possibilities for solving global problems. The issue is of central importance to all research areas at DIIS. Various lines of research on the subject have emerged in isolation from each other, and cross-disciplinary thinking has been limited. Therefore the sovereignty initiative will address this through workshops, public seminars and other activities during 2010 and 2011, coordinated by Thomas Gammeltoft-Hansen, Stefano Guzzini and Finn Stepputat. Activities comprise Workshop, May 3-4, 2010: Sovereignty, Territory and Emerging Geopolitics Workshop and PhD course, December 17-18, 2010: Governing the Dead. A different approach to sovereignty?
