Book anthology: Security Sector Reform in Sierra Leone

Perspectives from those who did it

This volume covers ten years (1997-2007) in which Sierra Leone transitioned from open conflict to a process of consolidation and development that culminated in the successful general elections of 2007. Security Sector Reform (SSR) is understood as being at the heart of this change. Security Sector Reform in Sierra Leone 1997-2007: Views from the Frontline seeks to shed new light on this process by giving a voice to stakeholders that were intimately involved in SSR efforts within Sierra Leone.

Contributions from both UK and Sierra Leonean personnel provide authentic perspectives that enable us to draw important lessons from a dynamic and evolving relationship between national actors and the wider international community.

The anthology is an extension of a project which led to the publication of the book Security System Transformation in Sierra Leone, 1997-2007 (2009) and previous versions were published as the Working Paper Series - Security System Transformation in Sierra Leone, 1997-2007 (2008).

You can order a copy of the book here, published by Geneva Centre for the Democratic Control of Armed Forces (DCAF) and LIT Verlag.

The volume was edited by Paul Jackson, Professor at University of Birmingham, and Peter Albrecht, PhD Candidate at DIIS and Copenhagen Business School.
