The Politics of Feminism

DIIS speaker at conference on "Gender, Equality and Justice"

On January 21, 2010, the Center for Gender, Power and Diversity at Roskilde University hosted a one-day conference on “Gender, Equality and Justice” with keynotes speakers Carol Bacchi and Nancy Fraser. The conference drew more than 200 participants.

Senior Researcher Robin May Schott spoke on the topic of “The Politics of Feminism”. She criticized the Danish Minister of Equality’s personal brand of feminism, which identifies feminism with individual choice of life-style. Schott also cautioned against the ways in which Western governments have appropriated feminist terms to justify war-time and anti-immigration policies. Drawing on recent debates in Denmark about a possible prohibition against wearing burkas, she illustrated how sexual politics is central for both domestic and international political issues.
